Even if you don’t use Twitter, you’ve probably noticed that Twitter is in the news a lot lately. What does the Twitter news about layoffs for broadcasters?
- Twitter isn’t going anywhere….for now. They tried to sell and now that no one will buy them, they’re trying to make their business more sustainable by cutting costs. Most believe the Twitter staffed was oversized for the revenue it was generating.
- Expect less innovation. All social media platforms want to innovate, but Twitter might have a tough time doing so in the coming years. Most long-time Twitter users, like myself, like the platform for what it is and haven’t responded well to changes anyway, so perhaps this is a blessing in disguise….except….
- Trolling could continue. The one area where Twitter needs to innovate is in controlling its trolling problem. Unfortunately, it sounds like that’s less likely going forward. I hope I’m wrong.
Twitter has suffered ever since it went public because it’s not a growing platform. Many of its users are the most influential Internet thinkers in the world. If it can find a way to survive by promoting all that makes it good and making itself better, rather than merely getting more accounts, I think it has a future. At this point, I think of it as a utility, and most news people feel the same way. Personally, I can’t imagine a future without it.
