WISN-TV in Milwaukee collected $39,340 in donations so children across the community will receive free books and have access to literacy support. This latest ‘WISN 12 Day of Giving’ initiative is helping the ‘Books for Kids’ program from the local non-profit organization Next Door.

“Reading sparks imagination, opens minds, and increases creativity. It’s no surprise that our community rallied around our WISN 12 Day of Giving,” said Shawn Oswald, President and General Manager of WISN 12. “It’s an honor to support Next Door in their important mission.”

The station devoted significant coverage of the fundraising effort both on-air and online. WISN 12 collected monetary donations on its website and through a phone bank, which were bolstered by a matching contribution of $10,000 from We Energies Foundation. In addition, more than 2,500 books were donated at participating Steinhafels locations throughout southeastern Wisconsin. The generous contributions mean that children and their families can build at-home libraries to improve reading and advance literacy outcomes.

“While summertime can mean a slump in reading for children, this campaign helps ensure that our kids are better equipped ahead of the next school year,” Oswald said.

‘Next Door’ is the latest local organization receiving support through the ‘WISN 12 Day of Giving’ initiative. The ongoing charitable campaign helps a different non-profit each month in advancing their mission, pursuing their goals, and improving people’s lives. Year to date, the station has raised $238,768 for non-profit organizations throughout southeastern Wisconsin.
