Mauston radio station WRJC and its owner, Jim “Murph” Murphy, were recently given the Rural Advocacy Award from the Wisconsin Rural Schools Alliance.

The nomination came from Mauston Schools Superintendent Joel Heesch who said the station is a “champion, a shield, and a voice for rural education in Juneau County.”

The citation for the station reads, “WRJC has provided school leaders opportunities to explain financial needs, answer questions, address misinformation, and help residents understand what’s at stake.”

“Murphy has also used his morning radio program to question state and local lawmakers about school funding and district challenges rural districts face.”

The station received the recognition Oct. 30 in Stevens Point.

“We hope to use this momentum of this award to make sure we continue to talk about the issues and successes of the foundations of our communities – our schools in Juneau County and in Wisconsin,” wrote Shelby Rheam on behalf of WRJC.
