Weekly Radio Addresses discuss voter ID, referendums

Weekly Addresses

This week’s Weekly Radio Addresses from Wisconsin’s Capitol are on the topics of voter ID and binding referendums. These addresses are available for Wisconsin broadcasters to use as they see fit. Here are the summaries from WisPolitics:

— In this week’s , Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu touts the Senate’s passage of an amendment to enshrine voter ID requirements in the state Constitution.

“Having voters show a photo ID is a commonsense way to make sure that every vote counts. This will secure Wisconsin elections and make sure that it is easy to vote and hard to cheat,” the Oostburg Republican says.

LeMahieu notes other GOP priorities for the session, including tax cuts, improving public safety, ensuring kids get the education they deserve, and promoting access to quality, affordable health care.

“The 2025-27 session is just getting started. You can count on Senate Republicans to work on behalf of you and your family,” LeMahieu says.

— In this week’s , Gov. Tony Evers says he will propose requiring the Legislature to allow Wisconsinites to put binding referenda on the ballot.

Evers vowed to propose a requirement in the 2025-27 budget that would enable residents to enact statutory and constitutional changes through a majority vote — and without the Legislature’s approval.

“Unlike over 20 other states, in Wisconsin, only the Legislature can approve and place ballot questions on the ballot, leaving Wisconsinites little recourse when the Legislature fails to enact policies that have broad public support,” Evers remarks. He pointed to the Republican majority in the state Legislature, saying they “shouldn’t be able to ignore the will of the people” and “prevent the people from having a voice.”
