Weekly Radio Addresses discuss taxes and spending

Weekly Addresses

This week’s Weekly Radio Addresses from Wisconsin’s Capitol discuss taxes and spending. These addresses are available for Wisconsin broadcasters to use as they see fit. Here are the summaries from WisPolitics:

— In this week’s , Gov. Tony Evers shares an excerpt from his budget address highlighting tax-related provisions.

“My plan will provide nearly $2 billion in tax relief through efforts to lower property taxes, eliminate the sales tax on several everyday expenses, and cut income taxes for middle-class Wisconsinites, including homeowners, renters, veterans, and seniors,” the Dem governor says.

He also notes investments in K-12 schools, an incentive for local governments to freeze local property taxes, and eliminating the sales tax on electricity and gas.

“I’m asking Republicans and Democrats to work together to pass my comprehensive plan to lower everyday, out-of-pocket costs for working families,” Evers says. “So, let’s get this done, folks!”

— In this week’s , Sen. Patrick Testin criticizes aspects of Gov. Tony Evers’ budget proposal, including a 20% spending increase.

“According to reports, Gov. Evers’ reckless proposed budget would increase spending by nearly 20 percent and turn our state’s $4.3 billion surplus into a $4 billion shortfall,” the Stevens Point Republican says. “This shouldn’t come as a surprise, however, since the governor’s 2023-25 budget proposal would have taken our $7 billion surplus and turned it into a $3 billion deficit.”

Testin adds Evers vetoed 95% of the tax cuts passed by the Legislature last session.  “We cannot, and will not, let Gov. Evers take Wisconsin backwards and tax you out of your homes,” Testin says.
