Weekly Radio Addresses discuss safe havens, small businesses

Weekly Addresses

This week’s Weekly Radio Addresses from Wisconsin’s Capitol discuss a new safe haven law and supporting small businesses. These addresses are available for Wisconsin broadcasters to use as they see fit. Here are the summaries from WisPolitics:

— In this week’s GOP address, Rep. Ellen Schutt celebrates the signing of a new safe haven law.

The Clinton Republican’s Act 79 allows for parents to anonymously surrender their newborns at designated “baby boxes” to be installed at fire stations, hospitals and law enforcement agency buildings. The bill was signed into law this week.

Wisconsin’s previous safe haven law required face-to-face interaction for the relinquishment, which Schutt says could lead to feelings of fear.

“Wisconsin’s 2001 safe haven Law carried a stigma,” Schutt says. “With their potential to provide a safe and anonymous option, baby boxes will save lives.”

— In this week’s Dem address, Gov. Tony Evers encourages Wisconsinites to shop at small businesses.

The Democratic governor has declared it “shop small” season in Wisconsin through year’s end. Small businesses employ nearly half of Wisconsin workers, according to Evers, and two-thirds of every dollar spent at small businesses stays in the community.

Evers highlights the Main Street Bounce Back Grant Program, which has helped over 9,400 businesses open new or expanded storefronts.

“Now’s the perfect time to visit your favorite small businesses and maybe check out a couple of new ones, too,” Evers says.
