Weekly Radio Addresses discuss mental health, UW deal

Weekly Addresses

This week’s Weekly Radio Addresses from Wisconsin’s Capitol discuss mental health and a deal with the UW Board of Regents. These addresses are available for Wisconsin broadcasters to use as they see fit. Here are the summaries from WisPolitics:

— In this week’s Dem address, Gov. Tony Evers celebrates the Year of Mental Health.

The budget Evers signed this year included over $40 million to improve mental health services in schools, urgent care centers and the farmer mental health assistance program.

Evers, who earlier declared 2023 the “Year of Mental Health,” has also announced $17 million in federal funding for the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.

“We know there is much more work to do, and I won’t stop fighting to make sure every Wisconsinite has access to affordable mental healthcare,” Evers says.

— In this week’s GOP address, Assembly Speaker Robin Vos praises the UW Board of Regents for approving a deal he struck with university leaders.

The Board of Regents for the Universities of Wisconsin approved a deal that would fund employee pay raises and a new engineering building at UW–Madison, curtailing DEI positions on campus in exchange. The deal was voted down at first, but the decision was reversed and approved on Wednesday.

The Rochester Republican lauds this as a win for Wisconsin.

“Republicans know this is just the first step in what will be our continuing efforts to eliminate these cancerous DEI practices on UW campuses,” Vos says.
