WMTV-TV in Madison is kicking off the 29th’s year of its Share Your Holidays campaign with a Veterans Day Food Drive. It runs from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. at the West Towne Metcalfe’s location. Viewers can drop off non-perishable food items, which will go to Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin.

The Food Drive is in partnership with ABS Global.

Members of the National Guard and local VFWs will be helping out the campaign at Metcalfe’s West Towne.

“We are grateful for soldiers of the Wisconsin Army National Guard Recruiting and Retention Brigade who are donating their personal time to help the Second Harvest for their food drive on Veterans Day,” said Second Harvest’s Kris Tazelaar.

Donations will help the 1 in 10 people in southwestern Wisconsin who are considered food insecure, which includes nearly 130,000 people, including more than 40,000 children. This year’s goal is to raise $1.5 million worth of food and funds. Every $10 donated provides up to $24 in groceries.

The Army National Guard has been part of the Share Your Holidays campaign since the first campaign in 1996. One of the co-founders of Share Your Holidays was Mike Hart, who was in the Army National Guard when he and WMTV 15 News Anchor Mike McKinney held the first campaign in 1996.

In addition to the food being raised during the Veterans Day Food Drive, more than 140 food and fund drives will be taking place over the next four weeks to support the campaign.

Since its inception, the WMTV Share Your Holidays campaign has helped provide nearly 75 million meals throughout southwestern Wisconsin.
