The Opportunity The Director of Wisconsin Public Media, which includes Wisconsin Public Radio (WPR) & Wisconsin Public Television (WPT), provides visionary leadership, guidance, and administrative oversight through management staff to achieve strategic objectives. The Director leads a unit of approximately 240 full-time and 70 part-time and student staff and has five direct reports. The Director reports to the Provost, University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW-Madison). WPT & WPR operate as collaborative networks with broadcasting licenses held by the Board of Regents of the University of Wisconsin System and the Wisconsin Educational Communications Board (ECB) and affiliated public radio stations. The Executive Director of ECB is a key partner in oversight of WPR & WPT. Within this collaboration the University of Wisconsin provides broadcast and non-broadcast, online, education and other content for WPR & WPT, technical support, fund development, community engagement and marketing. ECB oversees statewide distribution, engineering and broadcast efforts. WPR & WPT work closely with their 501(c)(3) member support organizations, The Wisconsin Public Radio Association (WPRA) and Friends of Wisconsin Public Television (Friends) to develop community support for the services. Responsibilities The Director establishes and nurtures relationships at the local, state and national level to advance and support public media through balancing the interests of multiple partners while focusing on meeting audience and stakeholder needs and preferences. The Director also initiates and guides work that maximizes the collaborative efforts between WPR & WPT and content partners across the University and beyond. The Director’s work is significantly focused on building organizational capacity and leveraging emerging opportunities through work with external partners and prospective partners including diverse educational, not-for-profit and civic organizations. Leadership and oversight responsibility for operating and capital budgets of more than $28,000,000 from multiple and variable revenue sources: university, state and federal government; audience memberships; major and planned giving; grants, business sponsorships, special events and sales of goods and services. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 10 years in increasingly more responsible leadership positions in public media or higher education, or equivalent. Must have the demonstrated capacity to provide effective leadership in a complex and dynamic organization and the ability to lead development and delivery of high quality programming and community engagement initiatives. Must also have a successful record of work with governance or community support boards or equivalent.
