Characteristics of the UW Oshkosh program

  • Industry-oriented, communication-centered program that fosters educational breadth across the mass media field and discourages student identification with a single medium. Promotes a triangulated approach to mass media education: students learn:
    • technological and procedural knowledge,
    • creative/aesthetic development, and
    • critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Facilities include two television studios reserved for the academic program and for student-run organizations.
  • Campus radio station (WRST-FM) is independent, but maintains an affiliation with Wisconsin Public Radio.
  • Sponsors six student-run organizations (WRST-FM, Titan Television, Film Society, International Film Series, National Broadcasting Society chapter, and the first student chapter of the Society of Broadcast Engineers in the U.S.).
  • Students create original programming (produced on a weekly basis) for the local community on both radio and television. They also have the opportunity to participate on professional film shoots.
  • Students produce an annual telethon, raising funds to combat the childhood genetic disease Ataxia-Telangiectasia.
  • Minor required to assure educational breadth.
  • Student projects have won 56 Grand Prizes at the National Broadcasting Society National Student Electronic Media Competition.
  • 11 students have won competitive internships through the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences College Student Internship Program.
  • 28 alumni have been selected as Outstanding Young Alumni.
