1:30 PM - 3:15 PM   “How to Succeed at Managing Gen-Y”

Dennis Kendall
The Coaching Company

The differences between Generation Y employees and your more mature managers are profound and well-documented. The question: As a manager, how do you make the differences work for you instead of against you? In this session, newsroom performance specialist and The Coaching Company Partner Dennis Kendall shares keys to making your Gen-Y staffers powerful and productive members of your team. You’ll gain in-depth understanding of the needs and priorities this generation brings to the job, and practical tools you can use to manage them more effectively from the moment you get back to your newsroom.

3:30 PM - 5:00 PM    “Forgiveness As A Business Virtue”

Bob Enright, Professor Educational Psychology UW-Madison

Excessive anger in the workplace is now too commonplace. In this talk, Professor Enright reviews the research on the effects of unhealthy anger, which include reduced energy and creativity, increased interpersonal conflict, and reduced self-esteem. Based on over 20 years of research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Dr. Enright presents a scientifically-based solution to that excessive anger: forgiveness. Forgiveness is the act of reducing resentment and offering goodness toward those who act unfairly. To forgive is not to excuse or condone, to forget, or even to reconcile if the other refuses to change. Strategies for forgiving those who act unjustly are presented in a practical way.

9:45 AM - 11:45 AM   “Diversity: Group Dynamics”

Carl Spikner
Executive Vice President Council For World Class Communications

While diversity training has historically focused on demographic differences, the real opportunity is the understanding of the multiple group memberships that we all have. The workshop focuses on how to identify group memberships and create/understand the relationships on which successful organizations flourish.

These sessions are a part of the WBA Winter Convention. The Winter Convention will be held January 23-24, 2008 at the Monona Terrace Convention Center in Madison. Please note that this year, your WBA will host the State Legislative Day in the afternoon and we would love to have you join us. See agenda for full schedule of WBA events.
